Problem Description
While activating a Nutanix AHV cluster or registering a Prism Central instance in Druva, the activation fails with the following error message:
Phoenix AHV Activation failed, Error: Activation validation failed with Error: Cluster was activated in past, activating parent of activated Prism Element is not allowedThis error halts the registration or backup proxy deployment wizard and prevents the completion of the Nutanix environment configuration.
Cause
This behavior is by design within Druva to prevent duplicate virtual machine (VM) discovery and configuration conflicts.
The error triggers because one or more standalone Prism Element clusters (which are managed by the parent Prism Central you are currently trying to register) have already been individually registered and activated inside the Druva Management Console. Druva does not allow a parent Prism Central and its child Prism Elements to co-exist as distinct registered entities simultaneously.
Resolution
Depending on your architecture goals, select one of the two paths below to resolve the conflict.
Option A: Continue managing via individual Prism Elements (Recommended if existing backups must not be interrupted)
If you do not explicitly need the centralized umbrella management of Prism Central within Druva, simply register the new cluster via its Prism Element rather than the parent Central.
Log in to the Druva Management Console.
Navigate to Protect > Nutanix AHV.
Verify the existing registered Prism clusters to ensure backups are healthy.
Deploy or configure the new backup proxy utilizing the specific Prism Element IP/FQDN instead of the Prism Central details.
Option B: Transition to Prism Central management (Recommended for multi-cluster environments)
If you want to consolidate management under Prism Central for automated discovery, you must clear the legacy child registrations first.
Ensure you have a temporary maintenance window or understand that existing backup schedules for those specific clusters will be modified.
From the Nutanix AHV page in Druva, locate and Delete/Deregister the specific Prism Element clusters belonging to that parent Prism Central.
Once the console is clear of those child nodes, run the registration wizard again.
Input the Prism Central IP/FQDN and activate it. Druva will automatically discover the underlying clusters cleanly without conflict.
Best Practices
Plan Onboarding Early: Determine whether your backup topology requires Prism Central or individual Prism Elements before deploying your first proxy.
Avoid Mixed Deployments: To prevent proxy activation failures and duplicate backup tracking, do not mix registration types within the same Nutanix infrastructure footprint.
