SharePoint Restore Assigns Specific Cloud Admin as Site Owner

Overview:
This article explains why a specific Cloud Administrator account may be automatically assigned as an owner to a SharePoint site when it is restored as a new site in Druva.

Problem Description:

When restoring a SharePoint site as a new site, a particular Cloud Admin account is consistently made an owner of the newly created site, even if they did not perform the restore or own the original site.

Cause:
This is an Microsoft requirement, a site cannot be without an owner and hence, the account that is used to grant API permissions to our app gets used to make the owner of that site.

Resolution

  • The Global Administrator account used during the initial Druva M365 app setup is stored by Druva and used by design to define the site owner for restores to a new site.

  • If the Admin account was the one used to grant the Druva M365 app permissions, then by default associated account is made the owner of the newly created site

  • The workaround is to remove this account from site ownership after the restore manually.
