Problem Description
When attempting to disable a SharePoint site, you may encounter the following error message: "Failed to disable the selected sites."
Cause
This error typically occurs because the SharePoint site is not a standalone entity. If a site was inherited from a Microsoft 365 Group or Microsoft Team, it cannot be disabled individually.
Resolution
To successfully stop backups for these sites, you must manage the backup settings at the parent level.
Identify the Parent: Locate the Microsoft 365 Group or Team associated with the SharePoint site.
Disable Parent Backups: Disable the backup for that specific Group or Team.
Automatic Sync: Once the parent backup is disabled, the system will automatically stop backups for the associated SharePoint site.
📝 Note
Disabling the parent Group/Team is the only way to release the backup lock on inherited SharePoint sites.
