This article provides the step-by-step procedure for configuring the Druva Cloud Platform to back up Microsoft 365 Teams Chat data.
Prerequisites
A Microsoft 365 Global Administrator account.
The administrator account must have a valid Microsoft 365 license.
Step 1: Connect Druva to Microsoft 365
Sign in to the Druva Console as a Cloud Administrator.
Start the Microsoft 365 app configuration. You are redirected to the Microsoft 365 sign‑in page.
Sign in as a Global Administrator and grant the requested app permissions. For details, see Microsoft 365 App Permissions for Druva App.
After configuration completes, open the three‑dot menu for the Microsoft 365 app and click Verify to confirm access to your Microsoft 365 users.
📝NOTE:
Druva uses OAuth 2.0 for secure token-based authentication. Learn more at the OAuth website.
If your organization enforces Conditional Access policies via Azure AD, these policies will apply during app configuration. See Support for Azure Active_Directory (AD) Conditional Access policies for details.
Step 2: Configure the data encryption key
Backup of SaaS Apps data requires access to the data encryption key to encrypt backed-up data. This process is part of the digital envelope encryption process that Druva strictly adheres to. Druva does not store the user’s data encryption key and has no access to the data.
Select one of the following options to generate the data encryption key.
Cloud Key Management System (KMS) (recommended) - Uses AWS KMS services to encrypt and decrypt SaaS Apps data. You cannot disable this setting once saved. For more information, see Configure Key Management for SaaS Apps.
Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) - If your organizational policies require complete control over the encryption of the data backed up by Druva, Enterprise Key Management is the solution for you. For more information, see Enterprise Key Management for Microsoft 365.
Step 3: Configure Azure Application for Teams Chat Backup
Configure a dedicated Azure application in your Microsoft 365 tenant so Druva can use Microsoft’s Export APIs for Teams Chat backups.
Register the Azure application in your tenant.
Assign the required Microsoft Graph permissions
Provide the application details (client ID, secret etc.) in the Druva setup wizard.
For detailed instructions, see Set up your Azure application for Microsoft Teams Chat backup.
Step 4: Configure a profile for Teams Chat
Specify Microsoft 365 backup settings in an existing profile or create a new profile for Teams Chat.
Ensure the profile is enabled for SaaS Apps and that Teams Chat is enabled for the profile.
Druva Cloud Platform backs up user data according to the backup schedule defined in the profile.
For more information, see Configure a profile to protect Microsoft 365 app data.
Step 5: Configuring Users for Teams Chat Backup
After profiles are ready, configure which users are protected using one of the following options.
Quick Configure: Use this option to manually select specific users, assign storage, and assign a profile.
Auto Configure: Use this option to automatically configure users at scale based on Azure AD attributes, groups, or all users.
For detailed procedures, see Configuring Users for Teams Chat Backup.
