Why is a separate Azure app required for Teams Chat backups?

Teams Chat backups use Microsoft’s Export API, which has a low RPS (request per second) limit. This limit is much lower than the typical activity generated during backups and can easily lead to throttling, causing delays or even failed backup operations.

To prevent this from affecting other Microsoft 365 workloads, Teams Private Chat is placed on a separate Azure app. This isolates the throttling risk so that—if the Export API is throttled—it impacts only the Teams Private Chat workload. All other workloads continue to run without reduced performance.

By keeping this workload separate, you get predictable backup performance, avoid cross-workload interference, and ensure more reliable and consistent protection overall.

Backup FAQs

How to backup Teams Chat data?

As an Druva Cloud Platform Cloud administrator, you can schedule automatic backups or manually backup Teams Chat data. To learn more, refer to the following topic: Backup Teams Chat data

What data of Teams Chat can Druva Cloud Platform backup?

Druva's Teams Chat protection covers:

  • Chat Messages: All one-on-one and group chat messages.

  • Chat Metadata: Includes chat title, members list, chat type, and creation date and time.

  • Message Properties: Detailed properties of chat messages such as content, attachments (via OneDrive), sender, timestamps, reactions, mentions, and more.

Handling of Shared Files (Attachments) in Teams Chats FAQ

How are files shared in Teams Chats backed up?

Files shared in Teams Chats are uploaded to the sender’s OneDrive. When Teams Chat Protection is enabled for a user profile, Druva automatically enables the OneDrive backup workload for that user.

Teams Chat backups include links to these OneDrive files, while the actual file contents continue to be backed up through the user’s existing OneDrive backup.

Does Teams Chat backup include the files themselves?

No. Teams Chat backup does not back up the file contents. It only stores the links to the files that appear in the chat.

The files remain protected by the user’s OneDrive backup.

What happens if OneDrive backup is disabled or the Teams attachment folder is deleted?

If OneDrive backup is turned off for a user, or if the Teams attachment folder in OneDrive is deleted:

  • Druva can still restore the chat messages.

  • However, the file links in those messages will no longer work, because the source files no longer exist in OneDrive.

Will I still be able to restore the chat conversation?

Yes. The chat content itself is restored. Only the links to missing files will be unusable.
