Configuring Mandatory Folders for Backup

Overview

When an administrator configure backup folders, these folders are automatically set as mandatory. This means the end users cannot remove them from their backup schedules, ensuring that critical organizational data is consistently protected.

However, there may be scenarios where you want to allow end users to remove specific admin-configured backup shares.

To enable this flexibility, you must contact Support to disable the backend settings. Once disabled, a checkbox for mandatory folders will become visible in the Admin console. You can then uncheck this box for any backup share to mark it as non-mandatory. Consequently, even though the backup folders were configured by an administrator, the end user will be able to remove it directly from their inSync client user interface.

šŸ“ Note

This feature is available on request, contact support to enable the same.

Prerequisites

Contact the Support team and request activation of the Mandatory Folders feature. When enabled the Mandatory Folders option will be visible in the Profiles section under Endpoints configuration, when adding backup content.

Enable the Mandatory Folders Feature

The Mandatory Folders option is not available by default. Contact support to enable the same. Once the feature has been enabled, administrators can configure mandatory folders through user profiles.

Procedure

  1. From the Endpoints, Microsoft 365, Google Workspace console, go to the Profiles.

  2. Choose the profile that is assigned to the users for whom you want to configure mandatory folders.

  3. Click Edit in the upper-right corner of the page and click the Endpoints option from dropdown.

  4. Under the Laptops, Desktop section Locate and select Mandatory Folders.

  5. Specify the folders that must always be backed up for Windows, Mac and Linux devices

  6. Add the required folder paths.

  7. Click Save to apply the changes.

The configured folders are now enforced as mandatory backup folders for all users associated with the selected profile.

Considerations

When mandatory folders are configured:

  • Users can continue to manage other backup folders based on their assigned permissions.

  • Mandatory folders are automatically included in backup operations.

  • Users cannot remove or exclude mandatory folders from backups.

  • Mandatory folders are backed up according to the configured backup schedule.
