Restore Teams Chat data

Updated this week

License Editions: For license details, see Plans & Pricing.

Druva Cloud Platform enables administrators to restore Microsoft Teams Chat data from a backup snapshot. Restored chat data is saved in HTML format to user’s OneDrive account.

📝Known Behaviors:

  • In-place restore is not supported due to API limitations. Restored chat data is saved in HTML format to the designated user’s OneDrive account.

  • Chats that originate from Teams bots may appear as “Unknown Chat” in the snapshot viewer, and only basic text messages are restored. Adaptive cards and rich bot payloads are not fully captured.

  • Teams chat restores currently do not restore certain advanced message attributes (for example, reactions, praise, and similar rich properties); these are backed up but not restored at this time.

Prerequisites: Before You Begin

⚠️DISLAIMER

Restoring Microsoft Teams 1:1 and group chat messages to a user’s OneDrive is a compliance-level export operation, not a standard user restore. This action may expose sensitive or confidential information to users who were not original participants in the conversation.

Ensure the following requirements are met before starting the restore process:

  1. Verify Licensing: Confirm you have the appropriate Druva license to perform restore operations.

  2. User Status Check (Preserved Users):

    • If restoring data for a preserved user, you may encounter an "Admin has disabled the device" message.

    • Action: You must first activate the user before proceeding with the restore, and then revert the user to preserved status after completion. See: activate a user.

Restore Procedure

Follow the steps below to restore Teams Chat data from a selected snapshot.

  1. Navigate to the Druva Cloud Platform Console.

  2. Go to Microsoft 365 > Teams Chat.

  3. Select a user to open the User Details page.

  4. Go to the Backups tab and choose Teams Chat from the Datasource drop-down list.

  5. Click a snapshot to view its details.

  6. In the Snapshot Viewer, select one or multiple chats to restore.

  7. Select a user’s Teams Chat account.

  8. Click Restore to begin the process.

For a granular restore, select the snapshot to display its chats. The view shows both 1:1 chats and group chats, including all participants.

Understanding Snapshots

All Teams Chat device snapshots display the backup time in UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) in the administrator view.

Snapshot Indicator

Meaning

Chat Labels

Chat labels are defined as follows;

  • Chat Title Preference: If a chat has been named or given a title, the title is given preference and is displayed in the listing.

  • Attendee Names as Fallback: If a title has not been provided for the chat, the attendee names will be displayed instead.

Last Sent/Received on

Displays the most recent message activity for the chat. This field remains blank for chats created or deleted by automation due to Microsoft API limitations.

Chat Sorting

Chats are ordered by their creation date, not by the last edited time. The most recently created chat appears at the top.
