Team Restore Failure with error “Channel Name Already Exists”

Team Restore Failure with error “Channel Name Already Exists”

Overview

The error message “Channel name already existed, please use other name” occurs when a Teams channel is deleted, it is moved to the Deleted Section within Microsoft Teams.

As long as the deleted channel remains in this section, inSync cannot create a new channel with the same name during the restore process.

Traceback:

Failed to restore channel. Error Internal error. Response Code: 400
Text: {"error":{"code":"BadRequest","message":"Channel name already existed, please use other name",
"innerError":{"message":"Channel name already existed, please use other name",
"code":"NameAlreadyExists","innerError":{}}}

Resolution

Validate if the channel is present under the deleted channels in M365, if the channel is not present in the deleted channels as well, follow below steps to restore the channel from Druva backups.

To restore a channel from Teams backups in Druva -

  1. Login to Druva and Go to Microsoft 365

  2. Go to Teams and click on the Teams name you would like to restore the data from.

  3. Select the snapshot and select the channel you want to restore.

4. Select Restore to the same Team.

5. You can choose in-place restore or restore as a copy and hit ‘Restore’.

If the Channel is Not Needed in the Deleted Section

• Permanently delete the channel from the deleted section.

• Once the deleted channel is purged, inSync will be able to restore the channel with the same name.

📝 Note

• Microsoft Teams retains deleted channels for a period before permanent deletion.

• If the restore continues to fail even after deleting the channel from the deleted section, contact support for further assistance.
