Device Replacement Restore for Claude Data

Claude Desktop data is not restored automatically during device replacement.

To restore your complete workspace:

  1. Complete the device replacement activity.

  2. Open the inSync restore window.

  3. Restore the Claude root folder (recommended) or select the required Claude components.

  4. Select Restore to the original location option for restore.

  5. Restart Claude app after data restore.

Restore only Claude Code Workspace

If you only want your development workspace, restore:

  • Code Projects

  • Code Settings

  • Code Routines

  • Code Sessions

You do not need to restore Cowork data, Plugins, or Skills.

Limitations

  • Claude App must be closed before restoring the backed up data.

  • Components with associated files must always be restored together.

  • Restoring only configuration files does not restore the associated content.

  • Plugins require manifest.json to be restored.

  • Skills require both manifest.json and .claude-plugin files to be restored.

  • Cowork Projects require Configuration, Repository, and Memory together.

  • Cowork Sessions require both the Session folder and the corresponding local_*.json file to be restored.

  • Restart Claude App after the restore to load the restored data. Plugins require only a UI reload.

  • Claude data restore is only compatible between devices running the same operating system. Cross-platform restore (e.g., from macOS to Windows) is not supported for the Restore to Original option because of architectural differences in file paths.
