Problem Description
Oracle PBS Backups initiated from the console failed during the Recovery Manager (RMAN) process, generating the error "ORA-00258: manual archiving in progress."
Cause
The root cause of the backup failure was the Oracle database being configured in manual archiving mode.
In this mode, Oracle is unable to automatically archive and add new log files, which is a prerequisite for a successful backup.
The output of the ARCHIVE LOG LIST command confirmed that automatic archiving was disabled.
Traceback / Logs
The RMAN logs explicitly showed the following error: ORA-00258: manual archiving in progress. The investigation involved running diagnostic scripts on the Linux server and verifying the database's archiving mode with the ARCHIVE LOG LIST command.
Resolution
To resolve the issue, automatic archiving mode was enabled for the Oracle database.
Following this configuration change, subsequent backups completed successfully.
