Comparing Snapshots and Versions for Okta

Updated today

When investigating a security incident or misconfiguration, it is often necessary to determine exactly what changed and when. The Compare functionality allows administrators to view the "before and after" state of an object (such as a User or Group) by comparing two different backup snapshots side-by-side.

Accessing the Compare Interface

To compare versions of a specific object:

  1. Navigate to the Restore Data page or use the Search bar to locate the specific object (e.g., "User 1").

  2. Click on the object's name to open the Properties pane.

  3. In the details window, switch from the Overview tab to the Compare tab.

Performing a Comparison (Snapshot vs. Snapshot)

The Compare tab visualizes changes to attributes, group memberships, and application assignments between two points in time.

1. Define the Comparison Range

Use the two dropdown menus to set your reference points:

  • Selected Snapshot (Left): Typically the newer version or your current reference point.

  • Snapshot 2 (Right): Typically the older version you wish to compare against.

2. Refine Your View

There are three ways to filter and view your comparison data:

  • Manual Selection: Choose any available snapshot from the Snapshot 2 dropdown to see a full list of recovery points.

  • Filter by Changes: Toggle "Show only changed snapshots" before selecting from the dropdown. This filters the list to only include snapshots where data modifications actually occurred.

  • Isolate Differences: Toggle "Show only the difference" to hide identical fields and display only the specific attributes that changed between the two selected snapshots.
