Problem Description
A Server needs to be decommissioned, and the user wants to keep its Backups indefinitely.
The Backup Retention needs to be set in a way that Backup data never gets deleted
Solution
The Backup retention needs to be edited, and then Backup set can be disabled.
1. Edit the Retention in the Backup Policy
Please note that It is currently not possible to set the retention in Druva Phoenix to keep Backup data indefinitely. However you can set the retention to the highest number possible, 99999.
Log in to the Phoenix Management Console
Select the workload from the Protect menu.
Note that if the All Organizations menu is enabled, you have to first select an organization and then select the workload.
Click Backup Policies and select the Backup Policy of the Server that needs to be decommissioned.
Under ‘Retention’, click Edit.
Set the Backup Retention in the Backup Policy for the Daily, Weekly, Monthly and Yearly data to the highest number possible in the Phoenix console, 99999.
The retention cannot be set to a number that has more than 5 digits. So setting the Daily, Weekly, Monthly and Yearly Retention to 99999 is the highest retention you can set in Druva Phoenix to keep all the Backup data for the longest time on Storage.
When a Backup set is disabled all its Restore Points get removed from the Storage when they expire according to the Retention that is set in the Backup Policy, except the latest Restore Point.
The latest Restore stays on the Storage indefinitely unless the Server is manually deleted from Phoenix. If the Server gets removed from the Druva Phoenix the latest Restore also gets removed from the Storage.
2. Disable the Backup Set
Log in to the Phoenix Management Console.
Select the workload from the Protect menu.
Note that if the All Organizations menu is enabled, you have to first select an organization and then select the workload.
In the navigation pane on the left, click Backup Sets.
In the right pane, click the backup set that needs to be disabled, click more options, and then select 'Disable Backup'.
