Exclusion of Teams Meeting Recordings (TMR) from backups

Updated over 2 weeks ago

1. Overview

Microsoft stores Teams meeting recordings (TMR) within the Microsoft OneDrive for Business and Microsoft SharePoint services. To achieve faster backup performance, all files located in the default “Teams Meeting Recordings” folder path are excluded by default from backups.

2. Default folder paths for TMR

The default folder paths that hold Teams meeting recordings are:

  • OneDrive for Business: /Recordings

  • SharePoint (Team Sites): /Channel name/Documents/Recordings

3. Applicability

This exclusion feature applies only to Teams-related sites in OneDrive and SharePoint.

4. How to include TMR files in your backup

If you want to back up TMR files (i.e., override the default exclusion):

  1. Ensure that the “OneDrive & SharePoint” sub-app has the Group.Read.All permission. If only that sub-app is configured, you must reconfigure it to include this permission.

5. Things to consider

  • SharePoint:

    • After you disable the exclusion setting, the next backup will perform a full scan of the configured sites.

    • To avoid full scans of all sites, only disable the exclusion setting for those sites where backing up TMR is required.

    • If you re-enable exclusion (after disabling), subsequent backups will still include any TMR files that were previously backed up.

  • OneDrive:

    • If you disable the exclusion for a profile, a full scan backup will be triggered for all users in that profile.

    • To limit scope, you may create a separate profile specifically for users whose TMR files you wish to back up.

    • If you re-enable exclusion (after disabling), subsequent backups will not include previously backed up TMR files.

6. Audit Trails

You can monitor changes to this exclusion setting via the audit trails (administrator audit logs). The logs will display entries when:

  • TMR files are excluded or included for SharePoint

  • TMR files are excluded or included for OneDrive users.

Summary

By default, Teams meeting recordings stored in OneDrive and SharePoint are excluded from backups to improve performance. If backing up these recordings is required, you must adjust the exclusion settings and ensure correct permissions and configurations. Be aware that changes may trigger full-scan backups. Monitor via audit logs as needed.
