Exclusion of Teams Meeting Recordings (TMR) from backups
Updated over 2 months ago

Overview

Microsoft stores the Teams Meeting Recordings (TMR) in OneDrive and SharePoint. To ensure better backup speed, all files from the default folder path of Teams Meeting Recordings are excluded from the backups by default.

The default folder path of Teams Meeting Recordings (TMR) is:

  • OneDrivefor Business - /Recordings

  • Teamssites - /Channel name/Documents/Recordings

โ€‹ This feature is applicable only for Microsoft Teams sites and OneDrive.

How to include the TMR files in the backup?

If you want to back up TMR files, configure the site collection or auto-configuration settings for SharePoint or user profile settings for OneDrive. For more information, see Configure Site Collection, Auto-Configuration Settings, and OneDrive user profile settings.

The OneDrive & SharePoint sub-app now includes the Group.Read.All permission, which is required to exclude TMR files from SharePoint backups. Hence, if you have configured the OneDrive & SharePoint sub-app only, you must reconfigure the sub-app.

Things to consider:

  • SharePoint: The first backup after disabling the exclusion setting will be a full scan backup.

  • SharePoint: To avoid a full scan backup of all configured sites, disable the exclusion setting only for those sites where you have the requirement to back up TMR files.

  • SharePoint: Once you enable the exclusion setting which was earlier disabled, subsequent backup snapshots will still include the previously backed up TMR files.

  • OneDrive: If you disable the exclusion from a profile, a full scan backup will be triggered for all users in the profile. You can also create a separate profile for those users for whom you want to back up TMR files.

  • OneDrive: Once you enable the exclusion setting which was earlier disabled, the subsequent backup snapshots won't include previously backed up TMR files.

Audit Trails

You can track the updates to the exclusion setting. The administrator audit trails from the Audit trails page will display audit entries for the following updates:

  • TMR files are excluded or included in backups using SharePoint site collection or auto-configuration settings

  • TMR files are excluded or included in backups for OneDrive users

For more information see the Audit Trails page.
