Unable to Perform File Level Recovery (FLR) for Hyper-V VMs due to Missing FLR Proxy

Unable to Perform File Level Recovery (FLR) for Hyper-V VMs due to Missing FLR Proxy

Problem description

When attempting to perform a Data Restore for a Hyper-V Virtual Machine, specifically selecting the Files & Folders tab, the restoration process cannot proceed. The user interface displays a warning message and the "Restore" button remains inactive.

Scenario:

  1. Navigate to the Restore section of the backup management console.

  2. Select a Hyper-V VM and choose Data Restore.

  3. Click on the Files & Folders toggle.

  4. The following message appears:

"File restore for Hyper-V VM requires FLR proxy. Currently there is no FLR proxy deployed."

Cause

The File Level Recovery (FLR) process for Hyper-V environments requires a specialized Druva FLR Proxy VM to mount the virtual disks and browse the file system. This issue occurs because:

  • An FLR proxy has not yet been deployed in the environment.

  • The existing FLR proxy is powered off, disconnected, or has been deleted.

  • The backup software cannot communicate with the designated proxy host.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, you must deploy and activate the Druva Hyper-V FLR proxy using the following two-step process:

Step 1: Download the Proxy and Generate the Activation Token

  1. Log in to the Management Console and select the appropriate workload.

  2. In the left navigation pane, click FLR Proxies.

  3. Click Register FLR Proxy.

  4. In Section 1 of the wizard, click Download to obtain the Hyper-V FLR proxy VHD.

  5. In Section 2, select an existing Activation Token or click Generate New Token. Copy this token for later use.

Step 2: Create and Activate the FLR Proxy VM

  1. On your Hyper-V host, create a Generation 1 Virtual Machine and attach the downloaded VHD as the OS disk.

  2. Enable Guest Services for the VM in the Hyper-V Integration Services settings.

  3. Start the VM and connect via the console (or PuTTY).

  4. Log in with default credentials (Username: root / Password: druvaphoenix) and reset the password when prompted.

  5. Follow the on-screen HyperVFLRProxyConf utility prompts:

    • Select your Cloud type (GovCloud or Public).

    • Configure Network Settings (Static IP or DHCP).

    • (Optional) Configure Network Proxy Settings if your environment uses a web proxy.

    • Enter the Activation Token generated in Step 1.

  6. Once synchronized, the proxy will appear as "Connected" in the Management Console.

Include and exclude filters

  • Include: Ensure the Recovery Point selected contains a supported file system (NTFS/ReFS).

  • Exclude: This proxy is required only for Files & Folders restores. Full VM Restores and Virtual Disk restores do not require an FLR proxy.

Verification

  1. Navigate back to the Restore screen for the VM.

  2. Select Files & Folders.

  3. Verify that the warning message is gone and you can browse the file tree.

  4. Confirm the Restore button is now active.
