Overview
We attempted to copy Knowledge Articles from one sandbox to another, but users may notice that images or attachments do not appear in the copied/restored articles. This is because Knowledge Articles handle attachments differently from other content objects.
Issue
Knowledge Articles are restored/copied, but their attachments (including images) are not.
This occurs because attachments in Knowledge Articles are stored within HTML embedded code, rather than as content versions or content document objects that store actual blob data.
Unlike standard content storage, this structure prevents attachments from being restored/copied during a data transfer process.
Response from Engineering Team
Engineering has confirmed that restoring or copying Knowledge Articles with attachments is not supported.
Attachments (including images) will not be restored/copied, even though the Knowledge Articles themselves will be.
Workaround
If images and attachments are critical, consider the following approaches:
Manually re-upload images/attachments after the Knowledge Articles have been copied.
Store images/attachments separately in a content management system and link them within the Knowledge Articles.
Use a backup/export tool that supports external attachment handling, if available.
Conclusion
Users should be aware that Knowledge Article attachments, including images, are not supported for data copy or restoration. Planning for manual reattachment or alternative storage solutions is recommended to maintain complete article integrity.
