Overview
Auxiliary apps, similar to M365 Advanced Apps, act as additional service accounts to enhance your Microsoft 365 backup experience. Their primary function is to safeguard your data by guaranteeing you meet your designated backup goals (Service Level Agreements or SLAs).
Auxiliary apps have the following benefits -
Reduce throttling issues
Minimize data loss risk from failed backups
Smoother and more efficient backups
📝 Note
This feature is available to Microsoft 365 Advanced app users only.
The availability of this feature may be limited based on the license type, region, and other criteria. To access this feature, contact your Druva Account Manager or Druva Support.
Auxiliary apps are deployed only after your approval. Permissions required to install and deploy Auxilary apps are part of the consent you provide while deploying advanced M365 Druva apps.
How do we address Throttling?
Upon saving settings for automated auxiliary app deployment, a fixed set of 10 auxiliary apps will be installed. If throttling issues persist and impact backups, the system will dynamically install up to a maximum of 30 additional auxiliary apps, within your Azure environment.
By default, the setting for automatic installation of auxiliary apps for M365 backups is selected. Administrators must confirm this setting to proceed with the automated installation to avoid impact due to throttling.
Important Information about the Use of Auxiliary Apps
Auxiliary Apps have the same permission scope as M365 Advanced Apps.
You can create a custom role without permission to install Auxiliary Apps.
Cloud Admins would always have permission to install Auxiliary Apps.
Auxiliary Apps are automatically installed ONLY after the admin enables the setting.
If customers have concerns after enabling “Enable Aux Apps”, they can disable the setting, and all aux apps get uninstalled.

Admin receives an alert email when throttling impacts backups.
The audit trail captures the actions when the admin enables and disables the auxiliary apps.
Before you begin
Ensure the following before you configure Auxiliary Apps to address throttling:
Microsoft 365 advanced app should be configured for backups
Enable Cloud Key Management System (KMS)
Required Microsoft 365 Permissions
The following permissions are required to install the auxiliary apps
Application.ReadWrite.All
AppRoleAssignment.ReadWrite.All
These permissions are made available to Druva when you accept the permissions while configuring or reconfiguring Druva Apps for Microsoft 365.
Enabling Auxiliary apps
If you are a new customer and configuring/installing Microsoft 365 Apps for the first time, you must save the recommended setting to install Auxiliary apps.
If you opt-out to enable this setting
If the settings for automated installation of auxiliary apps is disabled, you can enable that setting directly within the Overview page.
Procedure:
Sign-in to the M365 console and go to the overview page.
Click the Manage Apps button, and then go to the Auxilary Apps section.
Click the Edit button.
Select the toggle button to enable the auxiliary apps and click Save.
Successfully enabled the auxiliary apps message appears.
📝 Note: Auxilary apps will be installed in 60 minutes after enabling this option.
Disabling auxiliary apps
While auxiliary apps are designed to automatically manage throttling and ensure successful backups, administrators may choose to disable them. Disabling auxiliary apps will remove all the installed auxiliary apps and any ongoing backup may get impacted. However, disabling auxiliary apps can increase the risk of encountering throttling issues in the future.
Procedure:
Sign-in to the M365 console and go to the overview page.
Click the Manage Apps button, and then go to the Auxilary Apps section.
Click the Edit button.
Select the toggle button to disable the auxiliary apps and click Save.
Successfully disabled the auxiliary apps message appears.
Throttling notification
Whenever a throttling issue occurs and the setting for auxiliary apps is disabled, the backup administrator receives a notification about the API throttling impacting backups. In this case, the administrator can enable the setting to install the auxiliary apps automatically.
In-app notification:
Email notification:
View the status of Auxiliary Apps
Administrators can view the number of auxiliary apps installed for each workload on the overview page, providing transparency into throttling mitigation efforts.
📝 Note: All actions related to auxiliary app installation are tracked in the audit trail as well.
Important:
The current workflow does not support reducing specific counts of the Auxiliary Apps
If Customers want to reduce the auxiliary apps, reach out to Druva Support.
This feature is only available to customers with the M365 Advanced App for backup
If Customers have Druva Basic / Exchange Online+Public Folder / SharePoint Online+OneDrive App, then you can still Install Auxiliary Apps manually.
