This article explains how to manage user quotas within inSync, ensuring efficient storage allocation and preventing backup issues.
What is a User Quota?
A user quota is a limit set on the amount of storage a user can consume on the inSync server. As an administrator, you define these quotas to optimize storage utilization across your user base.
Quota usage is calculated based on:
The total size of the folders configured for backup (the user's backup set).
Any incremental (changed) data from subsequent backups.
All backed-up and shared data across all of the user's devices.
User Quota Exceeded Errors
Users exceeding their allocated quota will experience backup failures and see an error message similar to this:
This message indicates that the backup could not complete due to the user reaching their storage limit.
Important Note on Quota Calculation: Quota usage is determined by the size of the latest successful backup snapshot. For example, if a user has a 10 GB quota and their latest backup is 10 GB, their quota is considered fully used. Subsequent backups will only fail if the snapshot size increases beyond the 10 GB quota.
Changing User Quotas
You can adjust user quotas within the Druva console:
Log in to the Druva console.
Navigate to EndPoints > Users.
Click on the relevant Username.
4. Click Edit and then modify the EndPoint Quota as needed.
π Note: User Quotas always take precedence over Profile Quota settings.
Best Practices for Managing User Quotas
To efficiently manage storage and prevent backup failures:
Monitor Storage Usage: Regularly review user storage consumption to identify potential issues before they impact users.
Adjust Quotas as Needed: Increase quotas for users who legitimately require more storage, and consider reviewing usage for those consuming significantly less than their allocation.
Optimize Backup Sets: Encourage users to back up only essential and relevant data by communicating best practices.
Utilize Profile Quotas: For groups of users with similar storage needs, consider assigning a profile quota to streamline management.
Communicate with Users: Proactively inform users about their quotas, how they can check their usage, and who to contact if they need an increase or have questions.
By proactively managing user quotas, you can ensure efficient storage utilization and minimize backup failures within your inSync environment, contributing to a smoother data protection experience for your organization.
