Backup fails from protected locations on macOS Mojave devices

Problem description

macOS Mojave (10.14) has a new user data protection feature that prohibits Druva inSync from accessing protected locations, such as Contacts, Calendars, Mails, Messages, and so on, that contain personal data. Backups progress and complete without erorrs as inSync skips the backup from these protected locations until the device user enables the required backup permissions for inSync. While macOs Mojave displays an authorization prompt to the user when inSync tries to back up certain protected locations like Contacts and Calenders, it does not display any auuthorization popup for non-prompting locations like Mails and Messages.

Additionally, Mac device activation via IMD deployment needs root privileges.


Data protection feature is enabled in macOS Mojave 10.14 or later on the device.


To enable seamless backups of projected locations through inSync, Druva recommends that administrators must grant Full Disk Access via MDM. However, in scenarios where all users are not present in MDM, providing Full Disk Access may not be possible. The non-prompting locations may not get backed up in such cases.

Actions for inSync Client users:

To enable Full Disk Access for Druva inSync for back up from protected locations:

  1. Go to System Preferences > Security and Privacy > Privacy.

  2. If Privacy settings are locked, click the lock icon in the lower left corner and enter your password to unlock the Privacy settings.

  3. Click Full Disk Access on the left pane and click +

  4. Click Application on the left pane and select Druva inSync from the list of applications.

  5. Click A prompt is displayed ot apply the modified settings.
    On the prompt:

    1. Select Quit Now.

    2. Go to Launchpad and start the inSync Client.
