Overview
This article outlines whether any downtime is expected during the backup process when using AWS Workloads (CloudRanger).
Server availability during backup
Performing Amazon EBS snapshots has no impact on server availability, The snapshot process is non-disruptive and occurs seamlessly in the background, ensuring uninterrupted access to your instance.
Downtime during AMI creation
There is potential downtime only if you choose to reboot the instance while the Amazon Machine Image (AMI) is being generated.
AWS Workloads (CloudRanger) provides options to either:
Reboot the instance to ensure the AMI captures the most recent data (this will result in temporary unavailability), or
Skip the reboot, allowing the instance to remain online, but the AMI may not include the latest in-memory data.
While a reboot ensures a more consistent backup, skipping this will prioritize uptime.
Backup scheduling and retention
With AWS Workloads (CloudRanger), you can schedule daily backups according to your operational needs and customize retention policies to align with your data management strategy. EBS snapshots provide a non-disruptive backup solution, making them well-suited for production environments.
