Overview
This article provides a comprehensive guide on the three supported methods to deploy a VMware proxy in a Druva environment. The Druva proxy acts as a data mover, facilitating the secure transfer of backup data from your VMware virtual machines to the Druva Cloud.
User Scenarios
Initial Setup: Deploying the first proxy in a new VMware environment.
Scaling: Adding additional proxies to handle increased workloads or data volume.
Manual Deployment: Using an OVA for environments with specific security or networking restrictions.
Procedures Covered
Deploying a Proxy Using the Proxy Deployer Tool (Recommended for first-time setup).
Deploying a New Proxy via the Druva Console (Automated scaling using an existing proxy).
Deploying a Proxy from an OVA Template (Manual deployment via vSphere Client).
Procedure 1: Deploying a Proxy Using the Proxy Deployer Tool
This is Druva's recommended method for an automated, simplified deployment of the first proxy in an environment.
Prerequisites
Download the Druva Proxy Deployer tool from the Druva Management Console.
Obtain the Activation Token from the console.
A Windows machine with network access to your vCenter Server or ESXi host to run the tool.
Steps
In the Druva Console, navigate to Protect > VMware > Register New Setup.
Download the tool and copy the Activation Token.
Launch the deployer tool on your Windows machine.
Enter your vCenter/ESXi credentials and proxy details (Name, Datastore, Network Settings).
Paste the Activation Token when prompted.
The tool will automatically download the OVA, deploy the VM, and register it.
Procedure 2: Deploying a New Proxy from the Druva Console (Leveraging Existing Proxy)
This method is ideal for scaling out your infrastructure. It uses an existing proxy to automate the deployment of additional proxies directly from the Druva Cloud.
Prerequisites
At least one Druva proxy must already be deployed and "Connected" in the environment.
Target Datastore must have at least 110 GB of free space.
Steps
Log in to the Druva Management Console and navigate to Protect > VMware.
Select the vCenter/ESXi host from the left pane and go to the Backup Proxies tab.
Click Deploy Proxies.
In the wizard, select the Datacenter and Backup Proxy Pool.
Define the Proxy Name, target ESXi Host, and Datastore.
Configure the Network Settings (IP, Subnet, Gateway, DNS).
Click Deploy Now. Druva will automate the registration and deployment.
Procedure 3: Deploying a Proxy from an OVA Template
This manual method is used for initial deployments where direct control through the vSphere Client is preferred or required.
Prerequisites
Access to the vSphere Client.
The Druva proxy OVA file and Activation Token downloaded from the Druva Console.
Steps
Log in to your vSphere Client.
Right-click the target ESXi host/cluster and select Deploy OVF Template.
Select the downloaded Druva OVA file.
Follow the wizard to configure the VM Name, Compute Resource, Datastore, and Network Settings.
Power on the VM and open the VM Console.
Enter the Activation Token and required credentials to register the proxy.
