Disaster Recovery FAQs for AWS Resources
Updated over a week ago

Does automated disaster recovery work for RDS?

Yes. Automated Disaster Recovery testing functionality works for RDS.

Does ADR automatically recover instances during AWS region failure/outage?

No. ADR runs on demand.

Upon cloning, if changes are made to the source VPC, will those changes get replicated in the cloned VPC? Will this replication continue until the DR plan is changed?

No. The changes made to the source VPC are not replicated to the cloned VPC in another region.

To replicate changes to the cloned VPC:

  1. Sync CloudRanger with AWS.

  2. Click clone environment of the Disaster Recovery plan for which the changes made to the source VPC need to be replicated to the cloned VPC.

Can I use a user-managed KMS key to copy an AMI or snapshot to a different region?

No. This limitation is due to AWS restrictions on user-managed KMS keys to create copies of cross-region AMIs and snapshots. The key management policies of AWS prevent the direct use of these keys for cross-region Disaster Recovery (DR) operations, which impacts the ability to leverage these keys for copying resources between regions.

AWS enforces restrictions on using user-managed KMS keys for copying AMIs and snapshots across regions. This policy is designed to control key management and ensure security, but it results in limitations for users attempting to implement DR plans using default KMS keys.

Is there a workaround for this limitation?

Yes, Druva has implemented cross-account/region restore for AMIs stored in Druva Cloud. This solution allows restoration of AMIs across regions inspite of the KMS key restrictions.

Can a user perform a manual redirected restore as an alternative?

Yes, a manual redirected restore can be performed as an alternative. It remains a viable option to bypass the KMS key restriction.

What should I do if I encounter issues with this workaround?
