Manage Backup Policies for Azure Data Lake Storage

Backup policies define when Druva backs up your Azure Data Lake Storage data and how long the resulting recovery points are retained.

A backup policy defines:

  • When backup jobs are triggered.

  • How long recovery points are retained.

You can use the default backup policy or create a custom policy based on your protection and retention requirements.

Considerations

  • You can assign the same backup policy to multiple Azure Data Lake Storage accounts.

  • Configure the backup schedule based on the volume and frequency of data changes.

  • For accounts containing large volumes of data, consider scheduling backups during off-peak hours.

  • For storage accounts that use private endpoints, create both the Blob and DFS private endpoints in the same virtual network and subnet. If only the Blob endpoint exists, the backup fails with error AZURE_BLOB 32884.

Information required: Confirm whether a backup policy is assigned to an entire storage account or to an individual filesystem or backup set.

Create a backup policy

You can create a backup policy in the following three steps.

Configuration

Action

Backup Policy Overview

Enter a name and description for the backup policy.

Backup Schedule

Specify when backup jobs should run.

Backup Retention

Specify how long recovery points should be retained.

Step 1: Provide backup policy overview

  1. Sign in to the Druva Cloud Platform Console.

  2. On the Global Navigation Panel, select Azure > Organization.

Alternatively, open the Enterprise Workloads Management Console, select the organization from the top menu, and then select Protect > Go to Azure.

  3. In the left navigation pane, select Backup Policies.

  4. On the Backup Policies page, select New Backup Policy, and then select Azure Blob.

  5. On the New Backup Policy > Overview tab, provide the following information.

    1. Policy Name: Enter a unique and identifiable name for the backup policy.

    2. Description: Describe the purpose or intended use of the policy.

  6. Select Next.

Step 2: Provide the backup schedule

You can retain the default schedule or configure one or more schedules based on your backup requirements.

To configure a schedule:

  1. On the New Backup Policy > Schedule tab, select Add Schedule.

  2. Provide the following information.

    1. Backup Frequency: Select the days on which Druva should run automatic backups. The published Azure Blob workflow supports daily and weekly schedules.

    2. Start at: Select the time at which the backup job should start.

    3. Backup Window: Enter the number of hours for which the backup job is allowed to run. When the configured window ends, the backup operation stops even if it has not completed.

    4. Ignore backup window for first backup: Allow the first backup job to continue beyond the configured backup window until the first recovery point is created. This option is enabled by default in the published Azure Blob workflow.

    5. Time Zone: Select the time zone in which the backup schedule should run.

  3. Select Next.

Step 3: Provide backup retention settings

You can retain the default settings or enter custom values that determine how long Druva retains the recovery points.

  1. On the New Backup Policy > Retention tab, provide the following information.

    1. Daily Recovery points for: Specify the number of days to retain all daily recovery points.

    2. Weekly Recovery points for: Specify the number of weeks to retain the latest weekly recovery point.

    3. Monthly Recovery points for: Specify the number of months to retain the latest monthly recovery point.

    4. Yearly Recovery points for: Specify the number of years to retain the latest yearly recovery point.

    5. Enable Data Lock: Select this option to protect recovery points against accidental or malicious deletion.

    6. Enable Long Term Retention (LTR): Select this option to retain recovery points for one year or longer in the LTR tier.

    7. Keep recovery points in the warm tier: Specify how long recovery points should remain in the warm tier before transitioning to the LTR tier.

  2. Review the policy configuration and select Finish.

The backup policy is created and becomes available for assignment to the applicable Azure Data Lake Storage resources.

Edit a backup policy

Changes to a backup policy affect backups performed according to that policy. Changes to retention settings may also affect existing recovery points.

You may be able to modify:

  • The policy overview.

  • Backup schedules.

  • Retention settings.

Procedure

  1. Sign in to the Enterprise Workloads Management Console.

  2. From the top menu, select Organization.

  3. Select Protect > Go to Azure.

  4. In the left navigation pane, select Backup Policies.

  5. On the Backup Policies page, select the policy that you want to modify.

  6. On the Summary tab, select Edit for the section you want to modify, such as Overview, Backup Schedule, or Retention.

  7. Make the required changes and select Save.

About retention

Retention settings determine how long recovery points remain available for recovery. Appropriate retention settings help balance recovery requirements, regulatory obligations, and storage costs.

Consider the following factors when defining retention settings:

  • Compliance requirements.

  • Storage costs.

  • The type and business value of the protected data.

  • The period for which historical recovery points may be required.

When retention periods overlap, the longer retention category takes precedence: monthly retention overrides weekly retention, and yearly retention overrides monthly retention.
