Manage backup sets for AWS S3 buckets

Updated today

This article describes how to add and delete backup sets in a configured S3 bucket. Backup sets are important in setting the backup and retention schedule of the backups performed from the S3 buckets.

Add backup set to an AWS S3 bucket

If you have added the first S3 bucket, the procedure to configure a backup set is already described in the Configure backup sets for AWS S3 section. This procedure describes how to add additional backup sets to an already configured S3 bucket.

  1. In the S3 Buckets tab, click the S3 bucket.

  2. Click Add Backup Set to add a backup set.

  3. In the Configure for Backup window, perform the steps as explained in Configure backup sets for AWS S3.

Edit a backup set

This procedure describes how you can edit the backup set configured for an AWS S3 bucket.

  2. Click S3 in the left pane.

  3. Click Backup Sets tab on the S3 page. It lists all the backup sets configured for the S3 bucket.

  4. Select the backup set that needs to be edited, click more options, and then click Edit.

Disable backup from AWS S3 bucket

Disable backup when you want to pause the backups performed by a specific backup set. You can use this feature to prevent backups of corrupt or infected files from the AWS S3 bucket. Druva saves the backup settings and applies them again whenever the backup is enabled for the backup set.

There are three ways to disable backups of backup sets:

  1. Log in to the AWS Workloads Management Console. Navigate to Account and select an account.

  2. Click S3 in the left pane.

  3. Click Backup Sets tab on the S3 page.

  4. Select the backup set that needs to be disabled, click more options, and then click Disable Backup. You can disable multiple backup sets at once.

Second method

Enable backup from AWS S3 bucket

The backups for the backup set are disabled until they are enabled again using the Enable Backup option.

Delete a backup set

Deleting backup sets is essential when you plan to delete an AWS S3 bucket.

When you delete a backup set:

  • The backup policy which was linked with the backup set is detached.

  • The backups occurring through the backup set are stopped.

  • The snapshots backed up using the backup set are deleted.

📝 Note

  • To preserve the snapshots, you can restore the snapshots and then proceed to delete the backup set.

  • The retention period would not be honored for the most recent snapshot when a AWS S3 bucket is disabled. This allows you to restore the latest snapshot later if required.

To delete a backup set:

  1. Log in to the AWS Workloads Management Console. Navigate to Account and select an account.

  2. Click S3 in the left pane. The right pane lists all the backup sets configured for the AWS S3 bucket.

  3. Click Backup Sets tab on the S3 page.

  4. Click the backup set that you want to delete. From the Summary page, click more options in the top right corner, and select Delete.

A confirmation dialog is displayed. Provide a reason in the Reason for deletion box and click Delete. The reason is required to confirm your action and to prevent any accidental deletion. This is a mandatory field, and you can use a minimum of 10 characters and a maximum of 150 characters to provide the reason for deletion. Note that all deletion requests with a reason will be reported to the Audit Trails.

For more information, see View Admin Audit Trails page.

Delete AWS S3 backup set recovery points

If you are a cloud administrator, you can delete warm recovery points of AWS S3 buckets that you no longer require.

After you delete a recovery point, Druva purges the recovery point data from the warm storage, thus freeing up the storage space.

📝 Note

You cannot delete the most-recent recovery points of an AWS S3 bucket. However, all recovery points get compacted according to the retention period defined in the backup policy.

To delete a recovery point:

  1. Log in to the AWS Workloads Management Console. Navigate to Account and select an account.

  2. Click S3 in the left pane. The right pane lists all the backup sets configured for the AWS S3 bucket.

  3. Click Backup Sets tab on the S3 page.

  4. Click the backup set.

  5. The Recovery Points tab lists all the recovery points for this backup set. You can filter the recovery points by Recovery point Type ( Hot, Warm, or Cold ), and Created In ( Last 24 hours, Last 7 days, and Last 1 month ). Click the Filters icon to filter the displayed recovery points.

  6. Select a recovery point that you want to delete, and then click Delete. This deletes the recovery point from the storage and frees up space.

    📝 Note

The most recent recovery point of a backup set cannot be deleted. However, all recovery points get compacted according to the retention period defined in the backup policy.
